What’s Influencing You?

I just wanted to say a huge thank you to my followers over on Instagram for helping me choose my topic this week. If you haven’t followed me yet make sure you do as you’ll get more content like this on a regular basis.

So today I want to talk about what you’re listening to, or rather what are you allowing to influence you? I am for one not here to tell you not to listen to secular music, or that the only thing you should be listening to is Christian music. I am a HUGE music buff so I listen to music from all sorts of different artists & even in different languages. Over the past few weeks at the young adults night at my church, we’ve been talking about worship & how important worship & prayer is in our lives. Pastor Jonathan challenged us to make more time for worship & prayer in our everyday lives. I haven’t talked about this, but a few weeks ago I switched jobs & like any new job it can create a lot of added stress. This past week I was all alone at the office & I was getting really frustrated so I asked Siri to play me some Christian music & the whole atmosphere in the office changed & I actually felt a lot calmer. My thoughts weren’t as negative & I was hearing words that were encouraging & uplifting. Now, you can’t always do things like this, but it gave me a different perspective. What am I listening to? Not just when it comes to my music, but when it comes to my thoughts, my thoughts about life, myself, etc. Who am I listening to on my social media? Is it people that are uplifting & encouraging, or is it negative? Who & what are you letting influence you? Now like I said I’m not here to say you can’t listen to that artist, or you can’t follow that person on Instagram, what I’d like to propose is how do you feel when you’re listening to that thing or reading that person post? I believe it’s very important who & what we allow into our lives. The Bible talks about dwelling on things that are Holy & filling ourselves with Him. I recently unfollowed 1,228 people on Instagram & have been focusing on not allowing my life to be so influenced by what I see on the internet. It’s so easy to be distracted & really not see how different things are influencing you negatively. Take some time this week & re-evaluate what you’re allowing into your life & whether or not it’s benefiting you.

And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.

Philippians 4:8

Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.

Proverbs 13:12

In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

Matthew 5:16

You say, “I am allowed to do anything”—but not everything is good for you. And even though “I am allowed to do anything,” I must not become a slave to anything.

1 Corinthians 6:12
