So today I want to talk about identity first off I want to start off with what the definition of identity is. According to the Cambridge dictionary, identity means ‘who a person is, or the qualities of a person or group that make them different from others’ Your identity is what makes you, you, it’s what makes you distinguishable and unique from every other person on this planet. Growing up biracial I’ve been asked a lot if I ever struggled with my identity. Now they’re talking more about my racial identity and to be honest with you I’ve never struggled with that. I am who I am and if you don’t accept or like me due to my ethnicity that’s your problem, not mine. It doesn’t mean I haven’t had to deal with stereotypes, assumptions, & people being downright judgemental but I’ve always been confident in who I am, plus my ethnicity is not something I can help, I also always felt that God made me this way for a reason. Now, growing up I did struggle with who I was personality wise, when I was a pre-teen I swear my fashion sense, music tastes, the way I talked everything changed constantly. I went through girly stages, tomboy stages, the typical punk-rock emo stage everything under the sun and that’s because I was always trying to fit in, I wanted to be accepted by the people around me. It was exhausting and I’m not going to lie it didn’t really work. The people I wanted to fit in with would always find something wrong with what I was doing. When I turned 13 I began to come more into myself and accept who I was and what I liked and even then I began to realize you can literally be just going about your life not doing anything in particular and guess what? People will still find something wrong with you, or not like you. It was in my grade 8 year when I felt like everything around me was falling apart due to other circumstances going on in my life as well as being bullied that I learned what truly matters is what God thinks of me and that I’m being the person who He has made me to be. Now it doesn’t mean I didn’t struggle in this area ever again, but I began to realize that who I am should be planted in Christ. Christ made me to be the best me I can be and He made me for a purpose that no one else can fulfill quite like I can. If I’m busy trying to be like someone else I’m not only doing myself a disservice, but I’m telling God that He made a mistake and that I should be more like that other person. Not to mention trying to be someone other than yourself is exhausting, trust me I’ve done it. When you begin to live for an audience of One, instead of all the other people around you your life will truly change. You might be reading this and feel like you really don’t know who you are or who you’re supposed to be and I want to let you know the only way you’ll find out is by spending quality time with the One Who made you. You also need to spend some time with yourself as well figuring out what you like and why you like it. When you plant your identity in Christ you won’t have to worry about all the trends and the fads, or what this person is doing over here because your foundation is strong. God made us all in a unique way He loves you just the way you are and He wouldn’t want you to be anyone else but yourself because guess what? He made you that way for a reason. You won’t be able to find your purpose or who you are when you’re too busy trying to make it look like her purpose or trying to be her. If all we do is follow the crowd we won’t be able to find ourselves either because the crowd always leads us astray. Following in Him is where we’ll find ourselves because He’s the one who made us with all our desires, likes, dislikes and passions too. Don’t be afraid to stand out and be different from those around you because no one can bring to the table what you can bring.
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
Genesis 1:27
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”
Jeremiah 1:5
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Ephesians 2:10
I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.
Psalm 139:14
“If I’m busy trying to be like someone else I’m not only doing myself a disservice, but I’m telling God that He made a mistake and that I should be more like that other person.”
Love this!
I’ve been finding my identity more in the Lord recently and realizing that I’m different, and that’s okay! I definitely think this is something wonderful to discuss and talk about. Who we are can be fluid and change as we grow and that’s okay!

Thanks for sharing! I’m so passionate about identity. All of what you said is so true! I think what some people forget is that the longer we push against the way God created us, the more opportunities we miss out on. And the more opportunities we miss out on, the more the people around us suffer. Because our identity and purpose matters to the people around us!

So important to find our identity in Jesus, not in anything the world says. A very wise, honest post!
